I really wish people would differentiate between “social media” and “corporate owned algorithmic social media” because there’s a huge difference.

No there isn't. Not as it affects your mental health. Bots are on the fediverse fueling the same paranoia.

The core issue with social media isnt the medium its the platforms and how they influence user behaviour.

On the fediverse there does exist some of the same issues as Instagram etc but instead of the platform working to keep the user in this cycle of negative feedback and behaviour the fediverse gives the user the tools and even encourages the user to use in a healthier manner. Examples being settings to toggle inf scroll, content warning, keyword filtering, chronological feed, no ads, no UI Dark Patterns.

Are there bots on lemmy? Not that I've noticed and these nerds would surely sniff them out and scream. I think we're too small, flying under the radar.

If you were deploying bots, for whatever reason, wouldn't you concentrate on the largest user bases? We're nothing.

And yes, this place is shit for my mental health. I'm here because I'm unemployed, it's interesting and I don't have anyone to talk to. I should note, I'm married but my wife is foreign and we just don't share much to talk about, not deeply. That sounds awful now that I wrote it. But we don't share pop culture, science, politics, stuff I like to go on about with you people. :)

No

Facebook and Lemmy have very different algorithms, which is the part that fuels that

Spare me the buzzwords. Doomscrolling is horribly addictive and ruins attention spans. There's a proliferation of news/propaganda sites worldwide that are shared uncritically. Bot vote manipulation creates a false reality. Ads masquerade as opinion posts. Foreign actors locked behind monitored firewalls participate in open free speech discussions.

The list goes on and on. Don't point to brain cancer to defend thyroid cancer.
