can you elaborate?
Every Piefed instance has a randomly-changing block of links in it's sidebar that educates about media literacy, cognitive biases, groupthink, cults, propaganda and more. This is built in to the code of PieFed.
I can't ban nazis & tankies from using PieFed in the license (then it wouldn't be FOSS) but I can make PieFed in such a way that they don't want to use it.
I really like the low quality tag for users too. Seeing at a glance if someone posts lots of downvoted chaff is very nice. Thanks for what you do, rimu.
Gotta avoid the third group of quacks too!
Indeed quacks are everywhere. Some of them don't even realize they are quacks...
I’m gonna start quoting this. That’s great
Does it also include zionists?
does piefed have a microblogging function? I recently swapped to kbin because I liked the idea of a dual reddit + tumblr style experience but I'm also hearing good things about piefed
No, for Tumblr style there is wafrn
Making FOSS software with a normal name challenge: impossible
For future fediverse devs, here are some more weird names:
Schmorgasboard
Btuy
Tod
Juki
Lyter
Nombi
Geqo
Dupaf
Zsoy
yeah but the combo in one account is an attractive idea. ty for answering though!
Not yet but it's on the roadmap: https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/src/branch/main/docs/project_management/roadmap.md
Do any other instances remove or modify aforementioned block of links? I'm moreso curious to know what additions have been tried, but I'd also be shocked to hear if anyone's removed them altogether and for what reason?
It's not displayed on quokk.au. It's the rationale discourse box in the sidebar, it's a checkbox in the settings, same with the preset trump/musk filters.
As for why?:
By...removing sources of further information? Ok.
That's cool. How is it built into the code?
From my basic understanding, couldn't you just comment it out?
It can be disabled even easier than that.
But it signals our values and people thinking about hosting an instance would be silly to use software which has values different from theirs. The values permeate the entire software, the rational discourse toolkit is just an attempt to make them super obvious, really. For more subtle examples of value-driven features see https://join.piefed.social/2024/06/22/piefed-features-for-growing-healthy-communities/
Fascinating!
Might be more sensitive to say "small religions" instead of "cults", since that word has been co-opted by Christians for their moral panic
Disagree. Let's just call religions "big cults" instead.
Why do you think big religions are not included?
Propaganda from big religions trying to convince everyone they're not as harmful as cults, that's why. Back in the 70s the Christians villified the word "cult" and the concept of a small religion, trying to use slander to take out the competition. They roped plenty of non-christians and even scientists into their moral panic. And that moral panic has become the basis of our very language. Rimu probably didn't even think about leaving large religions out of that list, because hatred of small religions specifically is so normalised. That's why large religions weren't included.
I meant it opposite of your interpretation. "Why do you think it excludes big religions from the cult definition?" I completely agree with you, just wanted to make a small joke about big religions also just being some cults that survived a bit longer.
Because cult means "small religion", or at least it meant that before the 1970s, and I refuse to let monotheists decide the definitions of words.
Understandable. I checked the Wikipedia definition, because I didn't know a proper definition for cult.
So it isn't exactly wrong to call all religions cults, according to the old meaning, even before it meant small religions. But out was more aligned to certain places, like the cult of Apollo in Delphi with its oracle.
I've got a better definition for you, from line 1:
What is common is not unusual.
The preferred term in the study of cults is "high demand religion".
It would take an hour or so to fix it anyone actually cared to remove it.
This isn't the blocker y'all think it is.
Almost like it's not for them and instead for the people that have to deal with those idiots.
It's a pretty huge blocker for the lowest effort trolls, which is most of them.
