Welcome to Risa

All the pleasure of shore leave, none of the holodeck glitches.

Rule 1 — Be Civil, Not KlingonThis is a vacation planet, not the neutral zone.

  • No harassment, brigading, or trolling
  • No bigotry
  • Keep the banter playful, not hostile

Rule 2 — No Prohibited CargoSome things aren’t welcome aboard.

  • No spam or scams
  • No porn or sexually explicit content
  • No illegal content
  • NSFW memes must be properly tagged

Rule 3 — Keep It TrekPosts should be Star Trek memes or Trek-adjacent humor.

  • Crossovers are fine
  • Low-effort “unrelated” memes may be spaced out the nearest airlock

Rule 4 — Gatekeeping Belongs in a Black Hole
You’re welcome to have your own opinions on what counts as “real” Star Trek but forcing your view on others or pretending it’s the only valid one? That’s not the Starfleet way.
Everyone’s Trek is valid, from TOS purists to Lower Decks shitposters, and you don't get to dictate what is real or not for everyone.

If you see a post that violates the rules, or that doesn't inspire Jamaharon, report it so the mods can handle it.

Otherwise grab a horga’hn, order a Risan Mai Tai, and enjoy your shore leave.

Why you have to do Odo dirty like that

But, Is the "police" inside fully automated gay anarchism, the same as in capitalism 🤔 don't get me wrong, the ST universe is frustratingly and unrealistically hierarchical for a post-scarcity society, but I do have to wonder if the bastardness of the space-police would be on the same level when they're not protecting capital and the plutocracy.

You might like this article about 24th century law enforcement and whether Odo is a bastard.

The summary though is... yes.

I should have also mentioned the article is from StarTrek.com so... it has some authority lol

Nice article! Thanks for sharing.

Startrek.com is a source of some great articles

Nice article thanks!

For those like me who are currently watching DS9 for the first time… heavy spoilers in the last half. Outch.

[–] Stamets@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fuck. Well sorry about that...

[–] rhelawyn@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I’ll be fine, I brought this on myself

What's post-scarcity about it?

DS9 demonstrates clearly this isn't the case. Even TNG had mention of rations.

I haven't delved into the lore as much, I was always under the impression that The Federation is post-scarcity, due to replicator technology. This is reinforced in the "Shades of Green" Lower Decks episode.

[–] usernamefactory@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Earth is post-scarcity, but it’s not very clear how much this applies to the whole of the Federation. We’ve definitely seen Federation colonies deal with famine and even societal collapse (in Kirk and Yar’s backstory and elsewhere).

But regardless of all that, DS9 isn’t a Federation station, it’s just managed by Starfleet officers on behalf of the Bajorans.

[–] Damage@feddit.it 5 points 1 month ago

Yar wasn't from a Federation planet AFAIK

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

I wasn't talking about odo specifically

[–] Albbi@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh you probably misunderstood rations are rat-ions. They're the things that cations chase.

Reminds me of the Culture books I've read (still got a good ways to go, I've been slacking). That's a pretty common theme in the series - how far can Contact go to do its job? Who will it throw under the bus to accomplish its goals?

I need to get back on that series, its really fun to compare and contrast it to Trek.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago

Yeah, the Use of Weapons was pretty brutal in exploring this theme.

[–] DeathbringerThoctar@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

When Odo came out as anti union I stopped respecting him.
