"It's not cancel culture when we do it."

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

The only moral cancel culture is my cancel culture.

Something, something, cancel culture IRL started with disco record burning and the Satanic Panic.

Something, something, online cancel culture started with 4chan harassment campaigns, some of which were made to show teen girls that "actions have consequences" (read: slut shame them until they committed suicide, so 4chan people could post "An Hero" memes).

it is, but because "the left" has done it for years, decades even, maybe even centuries, it's fair to do it back at them

edit: i thought "centuries" would be over the top enough, but i guess not any more, so, to clarify, /s

When has the right been threatened by the government?

"Cancel culture" has existed for as long as culture has existed. It has been practiced by essentially everyone at some point, for virtually every reason under the sun.

We have called aspects of it boycott, exile, capital punishment/execution, mob rule, etc. I know those are all terms with their own meanings, but they also overlap to certain extent with what we call "cancel culture".
