I read most of that, but didn’t see any mention of his gaol sentence.
And it sounds like he was allowed to keep being free in public during the review despite having found said material?
This hasn't even been to trial yet, settle down.
So in NZ you can get caught red handed with child and animal porn, be able to keep working up until you resign, and not even get arrested until after trial?
I didn't NZ was so lenient on this sort of crime, I would have assumed this may have been related to the perpetrators profession.
Not a huge fan of the police, but they are one of the few groups who may actually have legitimate reasons for having that material on their machines.
We should really withhold judgement until an investigation determines whether this was related to a criminal investigation in some way, or part of his personal wank bank.
He was already suspended due to another matter, so wasn't working anyway.
Also, you pretty much never end up in custody because of non violent crimes before trial.
In NZ, criminals are punished after they've been tried and sentenced, not before. They're only detained before trial if they pose a flight risk.
So why did the first links I clicked both mention other Kiwi's getting arrested before their trial for possessing CSAM?

Edit: Removed second link as it was a NZ'er in AUS.
Edit 2: Here's some more examples however of people being arrested after finding CSAM on their devices.

Maybe I'm just a dumb Aussie, but please help me wrap my head around why it seems to be different rules for a former deputy police commissioner?
The old ' Rules for thee, but not for me' style of policing.
