I understand where you’re coming from. Used to feel the same. But now I just think my right to walk into Bobs Bait Shack and Firearms and buy a rifle is worth less than people’s right to not be shot on the street or in school by people our mental health system has failed.
Everyone will come down on a different side of that. But I think it’s a good discussion.
I just don't see how making lawful gun ownership more expensive prevents bad people from doing bad things with guns.
Raising the bar for entry makes it harder for everyone to do anything with a gun. I just dont care if "good" people are affected, because there is no societal good from them having a gun. There is a societal good from preventing bad people from getting a gun, and if good people have to be affected as well so be it. Get a new hobby if this ones too expensive.
This raises the bar for lawful gun ownership. It doesn't even prevent bad people from getting a gun. It doesn't stop violence from occurring. The law makes 0 attempts to prevent stealing a gun(which is a misdemeanor in CO unless it's worth over $1000), or to prevent crime. It just creates a financial barrier for those who want to legally own a gun. If you're a minority or LGBTQ, lawful gun ownership isn't just a hobby. For some of us it's literally survival. Especially with people disappearing from our streets. Maybe you don't look like an illegal immigrant. Maybe you look like someone whom the cops will always aid. If that's the case, good for you. But a lot of Americans don't have those kind of privileges. It wasn't that long ago that black men had shoot to members of the Klan.
Okay I'll buy it, how much is your monthly defense bill? Running through guns and ammo like crazy? Or do you just need to buy a single gun and a box of ammo? And like you said stealing a gun is trivial, right? Noones ever been priced out of a gun, and legal prices never affect black market prices, right?
It has nothing to do with the expense, it's the training. I agreed with you that the training should be free.
I thought the point of the right to bear arms was about freedom. If you need consent from a sheriff and it's based on their feelings, it's giving them freedom to take rights away.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a US citizen and guns are banned here, but the main reason for it seems to be playing out, and taking those freedoms away could be massively dangerous. More so than the threat of gun violence right now. How could any opposition defend themselves being shipped off to El Salvador en masse if a secretary of state things you contradict foreign policy goals?
It’s interesting to see this post and you’re comment because just recently I was thinking about how I’d gladly give up guns and my 2nd amendment right if it meant we could have gun control and gun crime similar to that of the UK or Japan instead of what we have today.
