Kind of related but I've been thinking whether there is enough interest here to spin up a community about Sportscar Racing? I'm gonna try to follow GT World Challenge a bit closer this year and I imagine there are a number of WEC fans on here as well.

There are several racing communities across Lemmy, some specifically for sports cars. None of them are as active as the Formula 1 community but there's definitely interest. You could try contributing to those instead of starting a new one.

Huh I tried to search earlier but that's my bad I guess. Truth be told this is better as the thought of the responsibility of being a mod gives me anxiety anyway.

Somewhat unfortunate that the Sportscar Racing sub is on .ml. I personally don't have a problem with it and frequently participate in communities on there but it has become such a big deal now that many people outright refuse anything that is hosted on .ml.

You're more than welcome to use !autoracing@crazypeople.online but there aren't many subscribers there yet. It's been my catch all for the random series I come across but it's meant to be for all kinds of racing. Something more specific or established might be better if you're looking for more immediate engagement though.

Would be kinda cool to have an instance dedicated to motor racing.

.ml may not be the hottest thing in town but !sportscarracing@lemmy.ml exists.

Just noticed it today. I'm not categorically against .ml but I feel like another home might be better as I know many people will refuse to participate on .ml. And also, I guess racing can tend to create political discussion sometimes that might be better in a more... neutral environment.

As long as you're not on an instance that blocks .ml, it's just as accessible to .ml users as the existing community. The bigger issue is the fact that the sole mod is inactive since a year.

Having an inactive mod is indeed a problem, especially if we want to see some growth. @Sylana@feddit.org seems like the most active there recently so maybe try coordinating a move? The reason to move off .ml is less to do with their users and more to do with moderation. Although the main benefit is to be able to say to people "look the community is not on .ml, you can participate".
