Is it a PTB move ([email protected]) to ban a user if their only activity in a community is downvoting posts?

The behaviour baffles me a bit. If they dislike the majority of the posts in a community, why are they subscribed? Or if they are browsing by /all, why have they not blocked the community? Are they under the mistaken impression that Lemmy has an algorithm which uses downvotes as an indicator for "show me less of this"?

Has anyone else encountered a "serial downvoter" in any of their communities?

I’m a serial voter (up and down), I have an opinion about practically everything. If anyone as a result gets a lot of down votes, they should perhaps create more content that I like? Just a suggestion.

That’s not bad per se but is your vote based on whether you agree with something or whether it contributes something of value to the community?

Many people use downvote as a „dislike” button which defeats the purpose of news-based communities where it’s the newsworthiness that matters. Of course I don’t like that Russia bombed children but I will upvote it so more people see it, for example.

I see that the same way.

Have you ever downvoted all of the 10 most recent posts in a community?

By coincidence this could have happened - eg if ten posts were off topic.

I've seen people systemically downvote all on-topic posts on a community.

At that point, they should probably block the community

Where is the /s?

Your account is less than 15 days old. You have 57 comments and one single post about politics. Not exactly the type of discussion that is interesting or valuable to the network.

Perhaps you should lead by example and post more of the stuff that you like? It's very easy to criticize, not so easy to actually show up and do the stuff that is needed.

Didn't even notice, thank you for pointing this out

Yep, I was on Reddit until that time, so I was referring to both Reddit and lemmy.

Well, welcome here! As other people said in another comment, due to the size of the platform, downvotes can really hide content on smaller communities, so in general people try to not downvote too much
