I am from southwest Missouri, the hills of the Ozarks. I returned there with my brown (Hispanic) partner, had two kids from my hometown in baseball uniforms yelling monkey at him. I miss my common sense country people, I miss my giant pile of puppies dude friends, always wrestling and blowing the occasional bottle up with a firecracker. But they won't even stand up to a widely acknowledged rapist. How am I supposed to be friends with them being ok with that? I miss my friends, the older men who have such fun stories, and the older women who should not have blamed the victims but they will never stand up to the men that are the abusers.
