Makes me wonder if he was fit to race after that shunt in practice. I love Jack and wish him nothing but success in F1 but at the same time driver safety should come first. No amount of pressure is worth risking not being able to make it out in a fire, etc.
Does anyone happen to know if drivers are re-tested/timed on exiting the car after big crashes? If not that seems like something that should be looked at.
Realistically, how would you measure this?
The drivers already have to pass a test as part of the safety protocol to be able to remove the belts and be out of the car in under 7 seconds, so something like that. Maybe test before and after they do a workout or something? I'll leave that to medical professionals to figure out.
Here's an article that discusses the driver testing in more detail - https://www.gpfans.com/en/f1-news/1039898/12-second-driving-test-f1-superstars-max-verstappen-lewis-hamilton/
Interesting, thanks for sharing that. Still it's the race distance that's the differentiator. Remember De Vries couldn't get out of the car either after his super sub for Albon. I wasn't thinking at the time how dangerous that could be, so yeah I agree with you.
Right, that's why I was thinking some kind of workout or something might give them an indication something is wrong before race time. I know other sports have concussion protocols when a head injury occurs and more thorough investigation is needed where they use a mix of historical markers and current performance as part of the evaluation. Maybe F1 needs something like that for the overall physical fitness of the drivers, especially after a big crash. I'll never forget watching Grosjean's crash and seeing Jack unable to get out of the car like that just gives me chills.
