I've tried playing with the default tileset and it hurt my brain.

Does it get better?

I personally couldn't get into the game until the steam release. I just watched other runesmiths carve runes into a computer and make dwarves happen.

Even the better tile sets pale in comparison to the steam release. I just wish the steam release hadn't happened under such dire presences.
