I've tried playing with the default tileset and it hurt my brain.

Does it get better?

It does. I don't see the ASCII code anymore. Just dwarf beards in blond and brunette, there is a dog, here a plump helmet.

Joke aside, it really does get better. Usually when I start smoothing rock pathways, things really come together.

I need to squirrel myself away for a weekend and get stuck in. I know I'll love it because it's the kind of game I enjoy - the entry point feels a bit higher than I'd expected though!

Rock and stone! It got way easier for me, when I started to just rely on plump helmets. Dwarfs would eat them raw and drink them brewed. That got me over the first winters.

And when you start building gold roads

With microcline flooring in the rooms

Uhh, decadent. I like it!

I personally couldn't get into the game until the steam release. I just watched other runesmiths carve runes into a computer and make dwarves happen.

Even the better tile sets pale in comparison to the steam release. I just wish the steam release hadn't happened under such dire pretenses

Play the steam version, then you’ll be able to easily pick up the ascii version
