Well being on the right side is much easier when you're in the opposition can say anything you want without any repercussions or responsibility
The SPD is currently in the process of forming a coalition with the CDU. Pistorius the Defence Minister is very likely to keep his position. Also the German Bundestag(one of the two chambers of the German parliament) has to vote for sending German soldiers on peacekeeping missions.
In other words there are a lot of potential repercussions and at least the SPD will be held responsible.
