Lefty Memes
An international (English speaking) socialist Lemmy community free of the "ML" influence of instances like lemmy.ml and lemmygrad. This is a place for undogmatic shitposting and memes from a progressive, anti-capitalist and truly anti-imperialist perspective, regardless of specific ideology.
Serious posts, news, and discussion go in c/Socialism.
If you are new to socialism, you can ask questions and find resources over on c/Socialism101.
Please don't forget to help keep this community clean by reporting rule violations, updooting good contributions and downdooting those of low-quality!
Rules
0. Only post socialist memes
That refers to funny image macros and means that generally videos and screenshots are not allowed. Exceptions include explicitly humorous and short videos, as well as (social media) screenshots depicting a funny situation, joke, or joke picture relating to socialist movements, theory, societal issues, or political opponents. Examples would be the classic case of humorous Tumblr or Twitter posts/threads. (and no, agitprop text does not count as a meme)
0.5 [Provisional Rule] Use alt text or image descriptions to allow greater accessibility
We require alternative text (from now referred to as "alt text") to be added to all posts/comments containing media, such as images, animated GIFs, videos, audio files, and custom emojis.
EDIT: For files you share in the comments, a simple summary should be enough if they’re too complex.
We are committed to social equity and to reducing barriers of entry, including (digital) communication and culture. It takes each of us only a few moments to make a whole world of content (more) accessible to a bunch of folks.
When alt text is absent, a reminder will be issued. If you don't add the missing alt text within 48 hours, the post will be removed. No hard feelings.
1. Socialist Unity in the form of mutual respect and good faith interactions is enforced here
Try to keep an open mind, other schools of thought may offer points of view and analyses you haven't considered yet. Also: This is not a place for the Idealism vs. Materialism or rather Anarchism vs. Marxism debate(s), for that please visit c/AnarchismVsMarxism.
2. Anti-Imperialism means recognizing capitalist states like Russia and China as such
That means condemning (their) imperialism, even if it is of the "anti-USA" flavor.
3. No liberalism, (right-wing) revisionism or reactionaries.
That includes so called: Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Dengism, Market Socialism, Patriotic Socialism, National Bolshevism, Anarcho-Capitalism etc. . Anti-Socialist people and content have no place here, as well as the variety of "Marxist"-"Leninists" seen on lemmygrad and more specifically GenZedong (actual ML's are welcome as long as they agree to the rules and don't just copy paste/larp about stuff from a hundred years ago).
4. No Bigotry.
The only dangerous minority is the rich.
5. Don't demonize previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.
We must constructively learn from their mistakes, while acknowledging their achievements and recognizing when they have strayed away from socialist principles.
(if you are reading the rules to apply for modding this community, mention "Mantic Minotaur" when answering question 2)
6. Don't idolize/glorify previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.
Notable achievements in all spheres of society were made by various socialist/people's/democratic republics around the world. Mistakes, however, were made as well: bureaucratic castes of parasitic elites - as well as reactionary cults of personality - were established, many things were mismanaged and prejudice and bigotry sometimes replaced internationalism and progressiveness.
- Absolutely no posts or comments meant to relativize(/apologize for), advocate, promote or defend:

- Queerphobia
- Ableism
- Classism
- Rape or assault
- Genocide/ethnic cleansing or (mass) deportations
- Fascism
- (National) chauvinism
- Orientalism
- Colonialism or Imperialism (and their neo- counterparts)
- Zionism
- Religious fundamentalism of any kind

The level of labor you're asking for in transcription precludes sharing anything in longer form. We're not content creators in general and while you are certainly free to restrict your community to being that you should understand fully that that's what you're doing.
Nothing is set in stone here, do you mean transcription of videos?
Bc videos are virtually never shared here and the format of YouTube/Discord memes - type videos is not rly in the scope of this community anyway
If you mean videos shared in comments, we should maybe clarify that those are out of scope
In comments they certainly might be though. I agree that long form is outside of your scope in posts but you should watch out with being over draconian on rules in regards to comments. Nobody should have to transcript a video they link to in a reply.
I edited my comment before I saw your reply; yeah we should clarify that maybe
It was meant more in the form of reaction gifs/videos you might use and using a simple tag to describe them so ppl can understand what you are posting while using a screen reader
To maybe give an example:
I am by no means an expert on writing alt text, but that's what I did:

It took me a few seconds to write
Ofc describing more elaborate reactions or videos used in comments is difficult, the main focus of the rule is intended to be for the main content on here (ie. posts). For files you share in the comments a simple summary should be enough if they're too complex.
When you are sharing a video on YouTube, the summary should already be included by the creator in the title and description. Ofc it should not fall on the commenter to do that if it's lacking
Including that in the rules would largely remove my objection.
I think that is a very reasonable addition, thank you for your constructive feedback!
Also an annoyance with the standard Lemmy software (clients may fix it) is that alt-text is handled only in markup (not saved with the saved media) so if you want to post it in a comment later you need to copy the markup (from the post/comment where you first posted it) each time rather than from your uploads. Probably an issue for most files hosts (not offering alt-text) too.
Unless there is some file host that handles this?
EDIT: Posting in a community like this helps with this, though still will suffer when organization becomes an issue and also niche/comment-reply memes that don't really make sense as a singular post.
Lemmy has an alt text field when you upload images as the main post
Yes, but It doesn't look like the alt-text is ever actually saved to the image, I would guess instead just passed onto the comment editor after that initial upload. At least I don't see it in the uploads tab (neither the preview nor in the viewed link itself, except on the original comment on page 9 of my comments).
That could be fine if there were a dedicated copy-markup-link button. It would also be nice for the alt-text to remain editable from there.
Sorry, what do you mean "saved to the image"? Alt text is a html property
I wrote an elaborate alt-text for this when I uploaded it in a comment:
But there is no alt-text there now unless I:

This is for comments. Posts have a dedicated field
Alt text is a feature of HTML and Markdown is something that gets translated to HTML. That's why it's not attached to the image anywhere and is part of the comments.
yeah that's how alt text works. you cannot embed it inside of an image AFAIK. It's a feature of the web, more precisely HTML
