Americans who don't want to get ripped off or cursed at: "Scusa, io sono Canadese e mi sono persa."
(This joke is as old as 2000 although given US treatment of Canada recently it's kind of fucked up).
Real question, how was the sentiment during the Reagan era? I'm too young to know if people ever tolerated Americans in the 80s or even 90s.
I can remember going overseas and everyone was super friendly because I am a Texan. That changed gradually from 2003-2016 and now they have to figure out if I'm an insane Texan or if I'm a normal human from Texas.
