all you have to do is water down what 'consiousness' is and boom individual cells are conscious. why stop there, lets get down to conscious molecules whynot.

This is basically the idea behind Integrated Information Theory, where even quantum particles have some nominal amount of “consciousness” because they interact with and affect their environment.
