Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Here’s how it’s going to go down:

  • Jon will ask pointed questions.
  • Elmo will respond with rhetoric, lies, half-truths, incendiary nonsense, &/or dumb jokes.
  • Jon will call him out on his bullshit.
  • Elmo will respond with more rhetoric, lies, half-truths, incendiary nonsense, &/or dumb jokes.
  • Jon will be appalled at Musk’s lack of integrity, ethics, intelligence, or humility.
  • The next day, right-wing pundits will spin it as a victory for Musk - saying he made Stewart “speechless and dumbfounded” with his amazing performance.

You forgot

  • musk buys wherever the Daily Show is produced
  • musk fires Jon
  • "The Daily Show, with Sean Hannity"
[–] tal@lemmy.today 42 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I mean, Jon Stewart and maybe some of the writers are the value there. Even if you imagined that happening, he can just go do a new show.

Something like Twitter takes a lot of doing to build; network effect favors incumbents.

Yep-- apple didn't want Jon to talk about China (and maybe a couple of other things) on the show they were paying him for. He left, started a new show (slash podcast), and got back on the Daily Show.

AI. He wasn't supposed to say anything bad about AI.

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Which is funny, because Apple itself is giving one of the best takedowns of generative AI with the flagship feature on the most recent iPhone.

I think it might depend on their contacts. There's a high potential for a non compete clause

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 year ago

I promise you Jon Stewart does not have a clause in any contracts stating he can't continue working in his field (namely comedy writing).

He's been in the game a long time and is at the very very top of his career right now. He already retired and went into advocating for 9/11 responders healthcare and veterans benefits. He's only back to doing a show because we need him right now.

musk fires Jon

Maybe he'll come back and lead the resistance with Bernie and AOC

[–] tenchiken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Don't you threaten me with a good time!

[–] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah we don't want this to happen no sir! Oh please save us put our best on the case, elmo and his mutts, those Christian spooky people, the shaved gang, get your best ai and please use your competence to not make this happen!! It would be truly just awful!!

[–] SabinStargem@lemmings.world 1 points 1 year ago

I would like a new set of Founding Fathers (and Mothers) to write up an improved Constitution.

[–] tatterdemalion@programming.dev 52 points 1 year ago (3 children)

We know how Jon handles this exact situation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCuIxIJBfCY

Musk will be roasted and embarrassed.

[–] dellish@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Oh holy shit what a take down. That ending was incredible. I'd be terrified of one day meeting Jon Stewart and accidentally voicing an opinion within earshot just in case he takes issue with it.

[–] tamal3@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

How the heck did I miss this entire series? I've been pining for Jon since 2015, was overjoyed that he'd taken over Monday's again, and had no idea that he'd been doing a program already. Oy.

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 26 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Have you seen the current speaking ability of Musk? I'd be surprised if he produces a single coherent sentence.

I hope Jon Stewart really pushes him through his filler speech and reveals Musk as stupid as he actually is.

Tho I still dont think this will happen. Musk would have to be incredibly stupid to accept this, like even more stupid than he actually is.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Replace Elon's rhetoric/lies/dumb joke non-responses with incoherent babbling and the right-wing will still say he "owned that lib".

[–] the_wise_wolf@feddit.org 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Exactly this! I mean, I will watch it, but I won't expect anything meaningful to come out of this.

[–] lolrightythen@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I can't see Stewart doing a puff piece. But I've been wrong before and I will be again.
