I don't mind the events/contests/competitions idea but I feel like the number of active users here (and I do mean active, not just up/downvoting submissions) is a bit low for that. Unless the idea is to use those events to make people engage more with the community. Plus there's the already mentioned issue of reward restrictions.
If you do decide to go through with a contest, the first one could be about potential banner replacements. Kill two birds with one stone and all that.
I'm not sure how flairs work on Lemmy/Mbin etc. so I'm curious what you have in mind - some pre-made ones (in-universe manufacturers, factions) or an ability to put your own text (within reason obviously)?
While I do have the time, spend a lot of time on the platform and I'm still trying to keep up with the project, I'm not sure I'm active enough in this community to offer my services as a mod. I'd be willing to help if there's need and no other candidates but that depends on your expectations and needs.
Either way, congrats on stepping up and good luck!
Very true. I am hoping to boost engagement with this, but it would be a little early to do anything big.
I like your idea of a contest for a banner replacement. I have also seen other communities do things like "Photography Themed" competitions where the winner gets to pick the next theme.
We could eventually do some sort of racing competition where we just submit screenshots of our best time and the winner gets to pick the next race location/rules.
Flairs are still getting worked on for Lemmy (there will be "user flairs" and "post tags" where posts can have multiple tags) Post tags: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/317 User flair: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/1456
I saw some potential workarounds, but they only work with specific clients and, looking into it more, it makes more sense to just wait until Lemmy officially supports them.
It doesn't hurt to come up with ideas for now or we can just hold off until these features are officially supported. I'm not sure if users will be able to put in their own text yet, but it sounds like we will be able to create some pre-made ones for the community.
Choosing favorite manufacturers seems to be popular, we could probably even throw in some event specific ones for the current story that's unfolding: Citizens for Prosperity (CFP), Headhunters (HH), Frontier Fighters (FF), Xenothreat (XT) etc.
Honestly, moderating isn't something I had on my to do list. I don't see any posts/comments in here that would have required moderation so far, but there's always a chance that something could happen in the future. My expectations are very low right now for any other moderators. It would be good to have at least one other person to help out. I'll give it a week or so and check back in if no one else has offered to help out. Thanks!
Sounds like a good plan for a start. As long as community doesn't suddenly explode with activity there should be plenty of time to brainstorm ideas on what to do with it. Especially if more people gets involved in this discussion.
