Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

I guarantee you that he named him after William F. Buckley.

I also guarantee you that Buckley would have fucking hated Trump because he was an "intellectual" (big snob) and did not like people who weren't.

Edit: He did, in fact, hate Trump. But don't ask me why he chose Cigar Aficionado magazine to talk about it. https://www.nationalreview.com/2016/01/william-f-buckley-donald-trump-demagoguery-cigar-aficionado/

Well the surname Tucker was a pretty prominent name on the side of the confederacy. I’m guessing that wasn’t a mistake.

While that was an interesting read, things like this always sound like they are written by a person who has options. The option to leave on a permanent vacation to Italy, or some other beautiful coast line.

the resistance to a corrupting demagogy should take first priority.

This is blunt, but ultimately useless, the way a knife gets when you don’t sharpen it.

And, as you pointed out, this is Cigar Aficionado. What a strange place for this to land.

I'm no fan of Buckley's, but I'm almost sad he didn't live long enough to rant about MAGA.

That would've been high entertainment.

Not a fan of Buckley but the fact that we no longer have conservative intellectuals is a huge part of our problem

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Conversely, the conservative intellectuals we do have are a huge part of our problem.

Other than Benny Shaps there reallyaren't any as those that tried to be intellectuals, Tucker Carlson and Ben Shapiro, abandoned it for the grift.

Natch, the faceless shadowy intellectuals.

I had the same thought, did a search as soon as I heard "Buckley" myself, but if he is named after William F. Buckley, there doesn't appear to be any statement online about it.

And there does appear to be some material saying that Tucker Carlson doesn't like William F. Buckley.

https://www.mediaite.com/news/tucker-carlson-agrees-that-william-f-buckley-jr-was-one-of-the-great-villains-of-the-20th-century/

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson agreed wholeheartedly with the assertion that National Review founding editor William F. Buckley Jr. was “one of the great villains of the 20th century” during a Wednesday interview with Dave Smith, a comedian and libertarian YouTube host.

Smith launched the initial attack on Buckley, declaring “I’ll tell you this: Whatever this atrophy in like the intelligence of the American people, it’s, I think it’s accelerating. I mean it’s-. Look, and again, just like you said I’ll disclaimer as well: I’m talking about people who I don’t necessarily like. Like I view Bill Buckley as like one of the great villains of the 20th century. I think he ruined-”

At that point, Carlson interrupted to shout “I couldn’t agree more!” and pound his fist on a table with a laugh.
