TLDR: They didn't want Chief showing up and then that's the unit everyone would immediately use.

I'm glad they did this, not just for gameplay reasons but for the story too, really hope the SoF story gets continued

I feel like a Chief would be a huge problem for balance, canonically he would need to be effectively invincible and turn the tide of any battle.

Simple solution: Chief dies as easily as any Spartan like Jerome, but if you lose him you have to reload a checkpoint.

I am glad they picked up the SoF story in some of the recent books, but, with the direction the franchise appears to be going, I’m a bit afraid it’s going to get dropped for another ten years. Ugh.
