we don't know the authors age, I had recess up to the sixth grade and this would be well within my skill level at that age

My son's school has recess up to grade 7, but I think grade 5 would be a better guess for learning the meaning of the word lesbian and also the quality of the handwriting. This is also about the time I recall girls and boys starting to have crushes.

If we're judging by handwriting then I'm nearly 30 and my handwriting isn't much better. So I say the writer was clearly somewhere in their early 20s.
