A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

And you probably never will, because anything a ghost could do to haunt traffic would just get blamed on "asshole drivers"

Yeah but I meant an ordinary roadway in like, y'know a city full of traffic. Tolls and stoplights, potholes and cops everywhere and whatnot

Not some zoinky one out in the boonies, cuz hauntings there are mega duh

Isn't it crazy that haunted houses are the only houses that are haunted?

[–] insanemantis@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ordinary suburban houses can be haunted too

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.social 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Wouldn’t that make it a haunted house?

[–] insanemantis@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I was imagining haunted house to mean more like Haunted™ House like with dusty candelabras and cobwebby spiral staircases and whowhatsthems

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

That's the usual, but The Amityville Horror was a normal, modern house.

Mega duh, or just double super duh? ;)

Honestly probably because lively areas don't feel "ghostly". Same reason why a house where somebody was murdered doesn't feel haunted when there's a big house party going on. Because ghosts aren't real and are a runaway imagination being scared of shadows. You could probably convince your amygdala to be scared at a big house party, but that sounds like a terrible plan.

They don’t feel liminal, which sparks the ghost stories.

Speaking of amygdala, they’ll just claim yours is “calcified” from the fluoride.

Theirs are enlarged from the constant lifetime of lead exposure

Wasn't me, a ghost moved them!

They're just happy to be out of traffic.

Whoa, cool username!

Usernames that are just a single word, especially that word, are gonna be ultra rare on here one day

Just spin up your own server!

Some of us have single-word usernames on the largest instance. 😎

I remember slashdotters flaunting their low UIDs. :)

Haha, mine may have been somewhere around that too, but I don't remember for sure. I think I recall seeing at least one two-digit ID commenter there when that sort of discussion came up.

I think that was a point made in the TV show Ghosts.

(spoilers for episode 1)The main character tried to move away from a haunted house and saw ghosts everywhere. Including when she was waiting for a taxi and spoke to a woman who died in a car crash on that road, and at another point saw ww2 parachuters stuck in a tree.
