Why would there be survivors decades after the ship sank?

But this was 60 years, she's supposed to have been the last living survivor in the canon, and only cause she was so young when it happened (20 years old in-canon, 80 years old in the finale scene)
If you read about Tromelin island one of the rescued people was a baby. Survivors can have kids...

But why would you be looking for them in the middle of the ocean?
Can't look on the edges because the coastline is infinitely long.
Plus it’s not like they’d be using the lifeboats on land
