Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

Anti-science, inactivism, and unsupported conspiracy theories are not ok here.

I mean you say "becoming increasingly clear" but it's been clear as day for about two centuries for socialists. Any progress happening now on that front is just retaking lost ground.

I think it became clear when the oil companies had their internal climate scientist prove it was them, and had that information leaked, and I believe that research was done 30 or 40 years ago?

Longer -- closer to 50 years ago.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Of course. I meant 'more and more obvious' for the general population.

Ah yes, all those socialist climatologists from the 1800s were warning of climate disaster.

(Just pointing out that their wording specifically referenced the environment and it was in response to an article about climate change)

I mean that's fair, but it's also a nitpick since I'm clearly referring to the democracy part of their comment.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago

I wasn't trying to nitpick, just saying they made a decent point. Regardless of who else knew capitalism was harmful, science being a new indicator of that fact is significant.

Two centuries of worry from socialists and we're still where we're at. They seem pretty fucking useless, ngl.

Because most people are ignorant and stupid, case in point.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world -3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Seems like smugly dismissing people as ignorant and stupid is an ignorant and stupid way of creating change. No points for good thoughts and no action!

I've taken plenty of actions on top of voting. E.g. helped set up a local community food sharing network, volunteer my time on an anarchist community, built my own house, grow my own vegetables, and try my best to support leftist candidates. How about yourself?

Well don't you know, they wrote those comments!!

"We're still where we're at" says the person presumably working a 40 hour work week.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world -5 points 1 week ago

I don't, thank you for 200 years of concern for climate change. Well spent!
