Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I have no idea what there is not to understand about this...and why it's mostly men complaining about "protecting women's spaces", lol.

This might upset some people, and you know what? Good.
If this upsets you, at least the others will know and the trash can take itself out.

Speaking with a stranger in a bathroom 🤨

Speaking in the bathroom, sure.

With a stranger? Absolutely not.

I've had a lot of short bathroom chats, mostly like in the meme, with other women in the bathroom. It's always nice to throw a compliment at a good pair of earrings or help a mom juggling all the things with the door. That kinda thing.

It's weird to talk to strangers in general, and to compliment a stranger, in a bathroom.. Maybe it's a cultural thing

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 15 points 3 days ago

Could be! The local culture around my parts tends to be cold and standoffish, but women tend to look out for one another still.

I get really nervous whenever anyone talks to me in a bathroom. Like, my anxiety there gets boosted to x1000, and I just want to finish fast so I can get outta there because I just feel like I'm doing as if I were making a fool of myself.

Though if I have to help with something (idk, something of theirs fall into the ground), I'll stand over it. But just because I love being helpful. Then I'll be again like Bocchi (from Bocchi the Rock!)

Earlier this year I was in a busy bathroom and this person had a cute shirt with birds on it. I complimented the shirt. She randomly told me to check out a bird park in a faraway city. I liked that shirt.

Try it, it'll change your life.

I used to have the worst peeshyness or whatever you call it=> can't pee around other people at the urinals.

I managed to solve it as follows: say it out loud "oh pee already" to yourself.

You'd be very surprised how many people immediatly talk courage into you.

"Ah don't worry about it, we all have it, take your time".

(Of course take this advice with common sense, if you feel unsafe for a valid reason gtfo there)

The last time I spoke with a stranger in the bathroom, I was washing my hands after taking a leak, and a guy walked in and said, "Pissed all over your hands, did ya?"

And then he proceeded to use the bathroom and leave without washing his hands.

I do want it to be clear that I did not piss all over my hands. I just wash my hands after using the restroom.

You know, like a person that isn't a fucking disgusting freak.

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 14 points 3 days ago

That's on that other person to feel shame, for not washing their hands but even more importantly. For giving such utterly useless and childish remarks.

Walk with your head held high, washer of hands. You stand with the warriors who fought in the covid wars.

I don't really have pee shyness, just regular shyness. I could never do that xd

[–] SarahValentine@pawb.social 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah, I have "I'm not at home with two locked doors in between me and the rest of the world while I'm being as vulnerable as I'll ever be while awake" shyness.

I usually at least nod hello. It's an American thing I think, to greet everybody.
