Mhm. Right. A paper contract that's only valid with Canada. The reason FN are not in favour of secession/US control, is because they'd almost definitely lose any treaty-like claims and privileges. Those treaties are only good so long as Canada maintains control over the area. If Alberta, with the backing of the USA, declares that land not part of Canada, what do you imagine is going to happen -- outside of a strongly worded letter of protest and some thoughts and prayers on facebook? Canada can't realistically retain that region by force, especially if the people of Alberta are against it. FN would not be able to stand up to, nor 'negotiate' with the USA's more authoritarian / fascist regime.

At best, you'll get something like what happened to the Mohawks after the various wars for independence were settled, and the states basically kicked em out for having sided with the brits. FN might be given an opportunity to resettle into other parts of Canada as essentially refugees.

And you are completely wrong about that, the first Nations of Alberta have voted to self-govern, and have been in the process of moving forward doing so for the past couple years.

Self governing doesn't mean they're independent / sovereign. I don't see how your comment changes anything about what I'd noted, honestly.

Its like saying "The Palestinians have voted, and Israel will now stop bombing them". Or claiming that the Palestinians are sovereign/independent just because they voted and declared themselves a nation / tried to get into the UN. The cold reality is that if they lack the power to enforce that vote / declaration, it's fairly meaningless.

Another example would be things like the Trump administration's war crimes. The world voted / generally agreed that certain actions were war crimes, and that there should be repercussions should anyone commit them. The US commits them daily, and is not accountable for their actions, because no one has the power to enforce those declarations against the US. But you think a FN vote will beat them. "OK, sure, whatever".
