Gagarin was, as it says, the first to go to space and come back alive. Whether that's true is debated. Gagarin was probably not the first to go to space, or come back. He was just the first to survive and land in the USSR.

There's a conspiracy theory that the first human to survive a trip to space was Vladimir Ilyushin, but he touched down in China. As well as a "number" of lost cosmonauts who "disappeared" https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Cosmonauts
