The secret to get a cat to use a bed is to place it in a spot they already like to hang out at. My cat was always sitting on an end table to look out the adjacent window, so I stuck a bed there and he couldn't be happier to lay there all day long now.

Edit: Placing a warming pad where you want them to sit works wonders too.

Oh yeah they really love and appreciate a good view. Especially if there are birds and other small wildlife nearby.

Just set something you don't want them to sit on top and they'll sit right on it.
