Also there is a MacVim native port of vim. And Mac ports of tons of Linux software, with package managers such as Homebrew sometimes making it easier.

I guess my point is that ownership of a machine is separate from its OS - and as one definition of the former I am using root access. Like, you wouldn't put your work machine onto your home network even if it was a Linux machine, nor conversely would you potentially even be able to without root access depending on how locked down they had it.

OTOH, if there was a strong need for such, you could theoretically place a personal Mac machine - say, your wife's - onto your home network (likely far less easily than staying within the same OS ecosphere).

So even if you had a personal Mac (with root access) and a work Linux (without such access), the work machine would be the odd one out, despite being the same OS type.

And by that style of thinking, Macs are "fine" imho (if cost of hardware were of no concern) - as work or personal machines. Even if you personally prefer Linux for home, which ofc is totally valid:-).
