Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1872 readers
9 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YPTB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

MODERATORS

Just happened to check the modlog right after it happened. Weirded me out to see my username at the top.

Because I so rarely downvote posts, I remembered the one: https://lemmy.today/post/59636388

I downvoted it because there was no context, just a list of names. No evidence. No nothing. It looks like harassment or trying to inspire a brigade.

I'd take it up with the mod but the strange callout list without context + OP's extended modlog makes them someone I don't want to DM.

In case it wasn't obvious from my post history, no I'm not a zionist and I don't defend zionists.

I even upvoted one of their recent posts! I'm gonna go take that vote back right now.

I'm sorry you're going through all of this.

Lemmy has a growing toxicity problem. More extreme users seem to be taking over as reasonable people get fed up, bullied, and leave. Even minor disagreements can get ya labeled a Nazi or fascist.

Recently I saw a post from one of the Lemmy's bigger bullies complain that even he was tired of the toxicity and thinking about leaving.

Lemmy used to feel open, diverse, and welcoming. Now many people seem determined to punish anyone who disagrees with them, which is ironic because that's the same kind of authoritarian crap they claim to oppose. Your case and what is happened to you is a perfect example of this. Even in this thread, someone called you a fascist. It's crazy!

Speaking in general, the main difference I have observed is that the "liberal" instances aka Piefed, LW and the large colonial-power-aligned instances, seem to have decided being federated with any leftist instances who challenge state-backed narratives is legally/politically problematic for them. No wonder, since leftism is becoming increasingly criminalized in the west. There has been a sustained campaign to paint anyone left of the Democrats as an "extremist" and to try to isolate us as much as possible. Previously, I'd say most of the political agitation on Lemmy came from leftists. Now, it seems to be mostly coming from anti-antifa crowd, aka the far right.

For this ban in particular though, I think this was a clear case of PTB. Wren is about as reasonable a user as I have come across on Lemmy.

Don't be sorry, I posted this more because it's funny than anything else.

Lemmy is a weird place. It's a whole lot less toxic than, say, my town facebook group, but still weird.

I do hope more people join with the understanding they can curate their feeds, and hope they see all the purity testers and trolls as oddities in an exhibit rather than the whole lemmy experience.

But yeah, super tempted to make a lemmy bingo card now.

I need more suggestions for what would go on it.

How about a list of common ban/removal reasons from the modlog. Like uncivil/civility; misogynistic/misogyny; fascist/fascism; transphobe/transphobic; liberal/liberalism; tankie/communist; you're a bot/AI/LLM; you get the gist; advertising/spam/spammer/shill; troll/bad actor/state actor; call to violence/antisocial/illegal

Those were just from the top of my head :p

Ooh good idea. One row could just be ban reasons.
