A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
- Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
- When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
- More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else
Rules
- All posts must be showerthoughts
- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
- A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
- Posts must be original/unique
- Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS
If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

If it's such a big deal why does he need a quarter billion house at all?
Creating reasons for someone wealthy not to share their wealth isn't helping the problem. I have a friend who wanted to give me land for basically free, but that's illegal. He has to charge me 15x more than he wanted to charge me or adopt me. Those are basically the only two options since their is a minimum land cost.
Well sorry dude, you all couldn't bear the land transfer tax.
Why he didn't give you a zero dollar 99 year lease and put it in his will for you to get, I have no idea.
There are other methods for individual to individual transfers and use of property, I'm not going to make a tax avoidance exception because you aren't creative enough.
Right, because paying 15x as much for the land is the same as land transfer tax... Ignoring that this isn't even my point. Not sure why your even arguing your point when I'm by no means rich. Are you arguing average people need to be forced to pay more for things?
Why didn't he give me a cheap lease? Well because I'm not going to build a house on someone else land obviously. Seems like a stupid way to lose a lot of money
Consider somebody who escaped generational poverty through athletics, film, etc. One of the smartest ways for somebody without a wealthy support system to end the cycle of generational poverty is to own property. Now, say that the sports star or a film star wants to by a secondary house for a friend, a teacher, a family member who helped along the way to expand that cycle of breaking generational poverty. Or maybe they want to purchase their childhood home. Whatever the reason may be, they are now being penalized for helping others.
They could just gift that friend $ to buy the house, instead of buying the house themselves
if said friend had debt (or is likely to get in debt) it makes mire sense to rent the house to them for a penny a year so it can't be taken
If there's that sort of cost disparity between the homes they might as well build new instead of purchase. The rules are easy to craft if you want to actually increase housing stock and lower cost of living.
Also, if they have HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS they can afford single digit extra millions for side projects.
Dancing around rich people's feelings is absolutely keeping this problem alive and destroying people.
