Haiku is lightweight because it’s designed that way.
Lightweight Linux is lightweight because it's stripped down that way. -(not the same thing)
Haiku: Single codebase, UI toolkit (Interface Kit), window manager, desktop paradigm, package system, and release cadence. Everything is built to work together making it feel smooth and light on older hardware because it's not fighting itself.
Linux: You're not running a lightweight OS; you're running a full OS with fewer packages installed (pain point).
Haiku feels faster with thread‑per‑window model, BFS filesystem optimized for metadata, app_server handles drawing with minimal overhead, no compositing unless needed, IPC is extremely cheap, and boot time is absurdly fast because the OS is tiny and unified.
Haiku's ABI stability (unlike Linux) is a core design goal. Apps from 10+ years ago still run, updates rarely break anything, and the OS is consistent because it's one project, not 20 glued together.
Haiku doesn't have modern browser support, but I see it can run Qutebrowser which I've used as main and was ok with (best for keyboard workflow and people who can script (or use AI to). WebPositive does use WebKit, but it lags behind upstream. Modern JS-heavy sites can struggle. There's no Chromium engine, Firefox, Electron apps, nor DRM (Netflix, Spotify web, etc.) -There are users that would be fine with all that though.
What of other software? Native apps are few but extremely consistent. Many ports exist (VLC, LibreOffice, etc.), but there's no Steam, Proton, or major commercial apps. I would not recommend it for professionals or gamers as there's not even GPU acceleration.
It's said to feel like a real, unified desktop OS where everything follows the same UI rules. There are no theming inconsistencies, no "GTK app in a Qt desktop" nonsense. No "this app uses Wayland, this one uses X11" garbage. No "which audio server am I using today" roulette

Linux is a modular server OS pretending to be a desktop. Haiku is a desktop OS that never had to pretend. Linux may (for now) run some software better (typically stuff that Windows does even better like VLC). Haiku will be missing some things other operating systems can do, but they're also often limited by hardware (like 4k playback).
Haiku's biggest problem is its inability to run most modern web browsers and software. I think the Haiku people recently managed to port Firefox to Haiku but it still doesn't handle the modern web properly.
And of course, forget about using any kind of productivity software on it if coexistence with MS Office or Adobe is required.
