Law is a profession where people dress up in funny clothes (even powdered wigs, in some places!) and say pseudo-Latin at each other. The words aren't magical incantations, but they're close enough that sovcits think they are.

It is profoundly silly.

I'm pretty sure attempted poisoning is one of those where the state presses charges on your behalf no matter what.

Uh, pretty sure it's not pseudo-Latin, it's just Latin. A lot of those terms date back to legal proceedings in ancient Rome.

Pretty sure we butcher the pronunciation, though. The Latin 'Caesar' was pronounced more like the German word 'Kaiser' than the modern 'Caesar salad,' for example.
