We had a real problem with the babies around the house when I was a kid - they often don't have enough of a rattle grown yet to alert you.
It's one of the reasons that now, I leave some tidbits out for the local family of possum - they come by each night. They love to munch on small snakes, and are immune to most snake venom. Plus they eat mice and rats as well:

When I was a kid we had multiple occasions of rattlers getting into the house and/or walls. It was the main reason we ended up moving and refer to that place as "The Snake House". Some of my earliest memories are of the insane battle when my stepdad killed one that came at us in our living room with a giant clock.
Now I'm envisioning a giant rattlesnake trying to bonk your Dad over the head with a Grandfather clock.
It was one of those weird 70s clocks made from a cross section of a large tree actually, now the visual is even weirder!
