- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I used to work in a large fishing ship as an engineer, there I became an atheist. Once there was a huge storm and we had to balance the ship to make sure it wouldnt roll, the guy who had to do it was praying and didnt have time to balance it, we almost died because he had mandatory pray time. From than we had a rule that there is no religion on the ship, once we come back to land than you can believe.
There's a great scene in Das Boot where the crew ends up trapped on the bottom of the Straight of Gibraltar. One guy starts fingering his rosary beads and praying and another guy punches him in the face and says "cut that shit out, we've got work to do!"
From what I hear of Islam on e.g. fasting it tends to be quite a practical religion. I'd not be surprised if that guy could in fact have not been praying at that moment and still stuck to all the teachings of his religion.
Yeah this is not at all how praying works in Islam. Of course you don't pray if you're practically unable to do so safely.
It is also considered a sin if you choose to fast under circumstances that put your health in danger.
Apparently (I'm not a scholar but was curious) in dire situations that require immediate action they could've prayed while helping out, even shortening it out as long as the short (verbal?) prayer is done in honesty and the situation absolutely demands it. Apparently it's even outright disallowed to not safe yourself or others during life-and-death situations even if it prevents you from the mandatory prayer because preserving people's lifes and your own tops those rules, at least that's what I read so far. If that boat story is actually true that person probably was a dipshit who happened to break his own religion's rules.
Also looked up fasting: There seems to be even more leeway on that. Just do it later if you can't do it right now due to illness or similar, or pay "fidyah" (give poor people money for food). Though I'm kinda curious how it's handled when someone is too old to fast but also poor as fuck, not a situation where you'd want to also feel guilty about this.
Young, expectant, illness, or age are all specifically exempt from fasting. At least that is how it works for the Baha'is, and they are to Islam as Christianity is to Judaism, so I assume they copied the rest of the fasting rules verbatim. I do know that the Muslims fast from sunup to sundown same as Baha'i
Same as every religion, there are extremists and ignorants, like all the christians ignoring the bible and the 10 commandments while pretending that the current president of the US was handpicked by their god to save them.
Or maybe the person thought "We're already beyond fucked, might as well die a pious death while praying, bet that will get me into the A list", or some variation of that.
There are different disciplines in that religion
Sure. I'm skeptical that any of those disciplines except perhaps extremely minor, strict ones teach that you have to continue praying, in your knees, in an emergency.
From speaking with Muslims during Ramadan, if there's a bona fide emergency that takes priority over prayer no questions asked. Anyone who says otherwise is an extremist or wrong.
