You are completely right and I feel the exact same. However, one thing I am certain of now is that the majority is not fine with this. There's many different ideas about how to do it, but a strong majority recognizes change is inevitable and necessary to prevent a further political slip.
Maybe I'm too positive but political theory and statistics has taught me time and time again how many quirks there are in different democracies that dilute the will of the majority and push some very fringe opinions. And it's just a matter of time until the democratic system realigns with the true will of the people. Unfortunately either by gradual actual change, or by complete destruction and rebuilding. But that's usually how democracies evolve.
