Westerners really don't like the idea of self-sacrifice. The idea that someone might martyr themselves for a greater cause is anathema to how a consumerist culture operates.
The idea that you'd want to praise someone and celebrate them for speaking truth to power right up until his last moments on Earth is utterly alien to folks who only care about accumulating wealth and leisure time.
