Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1807 readers
11 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YPTB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

I made a post to https://lemmy.world/c/unpopularopinion

https://aussie.zone/post/34735670

One comment was very rude, so I reported it. Another comment admitted that they were going against the rules of the community and downvoting a post they disagreed with, so I reported it. Two total reports I've ever made in that community that I can remember. Suddenly I'm banned by @JonsJava@lemmy.world, who says I'm reporting "everybody" and starts shit talking me publicly in the comments.

I know I'm not supposed to include private communications to "prove my point", but at least it's interesting to read.

Tap for inadmissible evidence

They stopped replying after that.

I now know it's a guideline, not a rule, but Jesus, what an unfriendly community over there. Just a DM explaining it's not a rule makes sense. Or at least lift the ban after the explanation, and apologise for being so snarky.

I’m also retired but I’m not healthy enough to go for walks anymore.

Sorry to hear that! I run several miles a few times a week, alternated with walking several miles the other days. I find that it really helps me stay centered and active with nature, my neighbors, etc. Hopefully you are still at least healthy enough to still enjoy your retirement!

but it seems more… extreme here.

Yeah, that was my main point. Sorry I veered off too much w personal experience. I have never experienced any users as extreme as Lemmy users. Reddit is a much bigger platform, but I think the stalker guys get banned there pretty quick, find a home here, and set up shop.

Like, I’m basically mecha-Hitler because I have a slightly different opinion and dared to post it.

Yep, the whole "Universal Monk must be a Trump supporter!" narrative started when I posted some news articles about how much Biden sucked. And I would post them right along with posts of how much Trump sucked. My point was that both parties sucked. But that nuance got lost quick. All my posts are public, so it's hilarious to me that people still ignore that I'm actually a socialist supporter. I even created and mod Socialist Party communities on here! lol

The groupthink here is actually worse than on Reddit. Because the most active communites on Lemmy are political, while Reddit has a bunch more active niche non-political communities. We have plenty of non-political comms here on Lemmy, but they don't get a lot of action. The extremists veer toward the political ones.

I love it though and will always stick around. But I can see how it might inhibit growth here, when non-political casuals come here and find that there is very little movement unless politics is being talked about. And I think that's why we have so many situations that are ripe for this PTB community.
