My grandpa was a Great Depression child. I remember my mom would have to dig through his pantry and throw out the expired food every time we visited, that man would throw nothing usable away ever.

Unopened dry food doesn't expire in most cases.* Nutrition and taste may get worse, but it's not harmful.

*(properly sealed, shelf stable, reasonable time frames)
