You forgot the quest marker hovering above the monster's head and the popup saying, "Monsters can hide in darkness. Use your lantern to light up dark areas."
Alright, on this topic, kudos to Amnesia: TDD.
They gave you a tutorial message about enemies, combined with one growl sfx…but then you don’t actually find any monsters for about 15-20 minutes of gameplay. Perfect way to keep people tense.
