Property taxes are good. Inflated property values are bad.

Property taxes are a regressive tax that causes lower income areas to charge a higher percentage of income in taxes. It basically costs the same amount of money to run a school no matter where it's located. If those taxes went into a state or national fund instead then they could be alocated more evenly without creating a higher burden on lower income areas.

Not at all. Some of us live in places with much higher property values/taxes so building the school is much more expensive. We live in high cost of living areas so all employees pay can be significantly more. And yes we may choose to spend more because we value our kids education more.

So I disagree with that contention, but completely agree that yes, paying for schools mostly from property taxes is hugely unfair. We need a “department” of “education” as part of the federal government, setting minimum standards for equity, inclusivity, education levels, and additional support for those who need it. Even better if it could be proactive, set higher standards, override those localities shortchanging our children

I can see that. My brother in law moved way out to the far-suburbs/neo-country. Then he has to send his kids to private school which if he lived in the most expensive burb with the best schools his property tax would be less than his combined with tuition. plus he gets less infrastructure and upkeep of same. we are talking unpaved roads where they throw sand down and barely plow.

Some people choose to live places with less infrastructure and support, and that’s a reasonable choice. But it’s not ok when it affects the education of the next generation. Parents may be the most important voice in raising children, but we as a society have a vested interest in them being well educated, and need our actions to reflect that

yeah its actually kinda funny because my wife and I have no kids and we vote for pretty much every school and park expansion/renovation (our town is pretty responsible and none of these are boondogles). Some folks though. Its like I want to live in a society where kids are educated and we have nice public spaces. I do wish more of this was funded on a national level.
