/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Missing "Will Garak and Bashir finally get together?"

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 9 points 9 hours ago

no no, the question is, "is Bashir actually gay, or is Garak that good of a spy?"

Am I just romance blind, or did anyone else not notice anything romantic between those two? People online always talk about how there is so much romantic subtext/chemistry between the two that the producers had to put a stop to, but I just don't see it.

It’s one of those fan interpretation things. You can view their interactions through a lot of modern shipping tropes. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JdlXt2EWnkM

When it first aired I think it was less about implied romance, and more just Garak occasionally having the energy of a queer-coded Disney villain.

Bisexual Bashir is also an easier fan reading than most shows around that time. The last season literally had a scene where Bashir accused Miles of liking him more than his wife.

Sadly it's not that there was "so much" it was that it was "so gay." Berman cracked down hard on that, so there's only hints left.

Rewatch the opening scene from season 1's "Past Prologue" where Garak first sits with Bashir. There's flirty subtext throughout.

There is some video that recuts that exchange a bit and adds some provocative music at specific moments, and I think that effectively changes the vibe to fit the romantic narrative. But the actual original scene just comes off to me as a kid scared of a potential bad guy.

He always seemed more nervous by the fact he (accurately) believes Garak is a spy, which fascinates him, but also was shocked that said spy was trying to get information from him which boosted his ego and played to his interests. Like a kid having their own hero approach them and not the other way around.
