No they didnt. The president is a dog type earthling in DB and Z named King Furry.

[–] dalekcaan@feddit.nl 60 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

His name is actually King Furry? When they said that in abridged I thought they were joking.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 20 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Lot of names in Dragonball have little puns behind them. Some survive translation unscathed, some don't. Ka(carrot). Vegeta(ble). Nappa (Cabbage), Raditz (Radish). Bulma comes from Bloomer, Her dads name is Dr. Brief, her mom is Panchy (Panty), and her son is Trunks. Whole undergarments family.

Then there's the Journey to the West comparisons...

Also in the Buu saga, we have the the villain Bibidi, his son Babidi, and the monster Buu.

Put 'em together and what have you got? Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo!

Dragon Ball is not known for its subtlety, that's for sure.

[–] QueenHawlSera@sh.itjust.works 11 points 17 hours ago

I was telling my friend about the lore, and he thought I made up the name King Furry as a joke. Had to show him screenshots from DBZ:Kakarot to convince him otherwise

The two beastmen assume Oolong is a Beastman until he explains he was born an Animal-type

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 28 points 22 hours ago

Looks like Oolong wasn't only forgotten by Toriyama but also by myself.

[–] AbsolutelyNotSpez@lemmy.world 19 points 23 hours ago

That was a very interesting read, thank you for sharing.

[–] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 21 hours ago

Facts. So it's only natural that there would be less and less of them. It was a short lived fad.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 7 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

He reached the ripe old age of 11, so they just decided to wait him out.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 16 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

It went the way most things do that leave Dragonball, Toriyama didnt like to draw them.

He dropped the child nudity, the animals could have been seen as a beastiality thing, so dropped as well. Stuff just also became not acceptable.

the child nudity

As someone who's never seen this show (or most other animes).....THE WHAT?? !!!

[–] QueenHawlSera@sh.itjust.works 7 points 17 hours ago

In Japan child nudity is not an uncommon sight in fiction, simply because it's seen as a sign of innocence. It's stopped being as much of a thing in newer works because Japanese Media is nowadays made with US localization in mind because if your shit becomes popular in America, it's like getting a blank check.

It's actually why in the Japanese Version of Earthbound Ness is naked in Magicant. (in the US Version he's in his Pajamas)

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 22 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Some people don't actually sexualize all nudity.

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 21 hours ago

In fact, nudity was used to symbolize that Goku was young and innocent. In Japan, a lack of sexual knowledge and urges is seen as a sign of youth and innocence. And there are several scenes in the original Dragon Ball where Goku is clearly confused when he encounters women in various states of undress.

[–] NannerBanner@literature.cafe 4 points 17 hours ago

I'm surprised you haven't seen the db meme where goku discovers bulma doesn't have a penis. https://breezewiki.com/dragonball/wiki/No_Balls! https://i.makeagif.com/media/8-14-2015/Wyri6k.gif
