The joke is that the husband and his friend went to Thailand and his friend transitioned. Now the old friend is "missing" and the husband is married to who that friend became.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 138 points 3 days ago (7 children)

Thanks, I'm dumb and thought she murdered his friend.

[–] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 71 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I'm trans and thought she murdered his friend too lmao

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 27 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I'm smart and I though she murdered his friend

[–] vaionko@sopuli.xyz 22 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I'm drunk and I though she murdered his friend

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 3 days ago

Smart and drunk are basically synonyms

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 15 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I don't know if I'm smart or not, but I think part of the joke is that the husband doesn't recognize that his now-wife is his former best friend, and that unlikely circumstance kept me from understanding the joke even though I read the explanation. (Not the explanation in this thread but the more ambiguous one in the other thread.)

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Does it say something about me that I got the joke immediately?

[–] boeman@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Me too. Do you happen to be an engineer as well?

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Erm... no, that can't be it...

[–] boeman@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Were you dropped on you head as a child like me… repeatedly?

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Explains why you became an engineer -Sheldon Cooper

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

Maybe once or twice, but I don't think that's why I got the joke without reading an explanation...

[–] myotheraccount@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not so dumb, given this is probably a screengrab from "you", and this character would definitely have murdered his friend

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 3 points 2 days ago

I think that's the context that was messing everyone up lol

[–] jade52@lemmy.ca 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I thought this was some boomer shit about spouses not listening to each other?

So many different interpretations in the comments.

[–] LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I thought it was just that he didn't need a significant other because he was so close with his friend haha

[–] General_Effort@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Oh! Good one!

That it's open to interpretation is part of the fun. I don't know what the person who made it intended. I didn't even recognize from what show it was.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

This would also be a funny interpretation.

Truth is the three of them bought a farm with six pigs and then ate the friend.

[–] A_Drusas@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I just had no idea what the joke was until I saw the trans comments. I was busy thinking, like, "That's really hard."

[–] MML@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

I thought she married a murderer.

[–] osanna@lemmy.vg 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Ah, I thought that she kidnapped/killed her husband's best friend. Yeah, maybe I watch too many crime/police bodycam vidyas on YT.

ETA: Ah, I'm not the only one.

[–] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

No the killing angle makes much more sense, strange meme

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

I understood "we met shortly after" as talking about the wife and the best friend. Like a hyperbolic expansion of the "adult men don't talk about their lives with their male friends."
