A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

History Lesson: Why all countries need to band together and help Ukraine
The USSR, which was known as the Soviet Union and was a communist government, used to have many countries under their umbrella of control, including Ukraine.
When the Berlin Wall fell in the early 90's Russia dropped the communist part of their government and became the Russian Federation. They gave all the countries under their umbrella autonomy. So more or less, the Russian Federation was no longer in control of all these countries.
Putin is the current President of Russia. He has held this position since 2012, after previously serving as President from 2000 to 2008 and as Prime Minister from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2012.
Putin has expressed a desire to restore the glory of the Soviet Union, which is a key part of his domestic and foreign policy goals. He aims to regain Russia's influence in world affairs and strengthen its position against perceived threats, particularly from NATO. (https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-26769481)
If Putin regains control of Ukraine, he will move on to the next country, then the next country, until Russia's old glory is restored.
This must not happen.
Ukraine is doing quite well as the premier drone developer. So much so, that countries all over the world now seek their weapons. Their newest drone development is nothing short of awesome.
Indeed, but Russia can still win with attrition. The fucking Nazis thought they would continue to punish the Soviet Union, with combat experience and "Superior" weapons, by late 1942, shit was changing real fast.
awe isn't quite the emotion it elicits, but i get what you're saying. I knew we were going to get to AI + Drone soon, but i wasn't hoping this soon.
Completely agree and the best way to do this is to consistently call out breaches of international law. The problem with the part of the world that is most threatened by Russia is that it tends to go quiet when its allies (the US and Israel) breach international law, which comes across as hipocrisy / a double standard. The more consistent they are the more likely they are to get global support.
Many of these countries were once colonial empires so they understand imperialism well. They should know that in order to form a coherent argument they need to be against imperialism universally, not just be against it when it's directed their way which is a difficult case to make.
Why?
Like, self determination and all that, yes. But is there a reason beyond the fundamental human right of a people to determine their own government that we should intervene in Russian power politics?
Do you need a reason beyond that? I'm confused by this question.
If you need reasons, here are two: Everyone wants less wars. Deny russia wealth and territory gains from waging war on other countries dissuades russia from starting more wars. Also quality of life and freedoms will be better when russia is not occupying your home.
Let's say you're arrival, and the United Kingdom suddenly wants to rule over you. Would you accept this change?
Or if you're South American - should Spain be in control?
All autonomous countries that exists now should stay that way. No other country should invade and take control.
Right, I agree with that. The wording of the post makes it seem as though Russia shouldn't be allowed to reestablish a union of countries through any means.
The Soviet Union was entered voluntarily. Ukraine was the first member nation.
The Soviet Union was forged through wars. Especially the states in the Caucasus did not enter voluntarily. Or rather, their initial governments after independence didn't enter voluntarily.
