- The decision is difficult to take when at the front you have one guy (Dewulf) who had done all the hard work to remain the only member of the early breakaway still ahead, and the group in which he is contains only 4+1 riders (I mean it is not a group of 12 where he may finish out of top-10).
- In the 'peloton' there are already 2 teams (FDJ and Bora) pulling hard, with dedication; and they are more numerous than Decathlon are (I believe? FDJ were 5 and perhaps the same for Bora; they could (and did) put at least 2 men each while keeping launchers, while Decathlon could at most have put 1 guy (keeping only 1 launcher), if they were 3 altogether).
- In the same 'peloton' you have Pedersen who just won the peloton's sprint in San-Remo for his first racing day, and Laporte who won a small sprint early in the season and managed to ditch the peloton in the first flandrienne of the season (Het Nieuwsblad). So beforehand, that's not a 100% or 99% sure bet.
