Rules
  1. Follow the aussie.zone rules
  2. We are not a generic World News clone. News must be relevant to Australians and our region. Obvious disregard will earn an warning and then a ban if continued. (If an article isn't from an Oceanian news outlet, and it doesn’t mention Australia, then it’s probably off-topic)
  3. Leave seppocentrism at the door. If you don't know what that means, you're not ready to post here yet.
  4. Avoid editorialising headlines. Opinions go in the comments, not the post.

In short:

The Eurovision Song Contest faces the prospect of mass withdrawals after organisers opt not to vote on Israel's future participation, allowing it to take part in next year's event.

Widespread opposition to the war in Gaza had led to mounting calls for Israel to be excluded from the annual contest.

What's next?

Public broadcasters in Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands and Slovenia say they will not participate in next year's event, and more are expected to follow.

... A large jumbo jet can carry up to 600 passengers.3 The number of child deaths is equivalent to a crash of a jumbo jet with only children on board, every hour of every day of the year.

A newspaper that would cover the most important events that happened in the last 24 hours would always cover the thousands of child deaths on its front page. The headline would be the same every day: ‘14,000 Children Died Yesterday’.

But newspapers tell us about the extraordinary events that happened in the last 24 hours, not the ordinary events that happen every day, regardless of how tragic they might be. This means that one of the world’s largest problems is barely mentioned in public discussion and hardly noticed in the news media.

A description of Genocide and its international legal basis and methods application. Focusing specifically on the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.

Section on Genocidal intent.

This is the unique element of the crime of genocide: that the crimes must be committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a racial, ethnic, religious or national group. The International Court of Justice has determined (para. 45) that the Palestinians are such a protected group. The pattern of conduct demonstrates an intent to destroy this group, in whole or in part.

Genocidal intent is also evidenced by direct statements by Israeli civilian and military leadership. Since October 2023, Israeli civilian and military leadership have made express statements about the intention to deny Palestinians necessities of life, erase Palestine from the map, and destroy Palestinians. Such statements have been echoed by community members such as journalists and soldiers.

In short:

A new report identifies Jakarta, with 42 million residents, as having the largest population globally.

Tokyo had long held the title as the world's largest city, but its population growth has stagnated.

Huang said expectations around Nvidia have become so extreme that Wall Street now sees danger in both directions.

“If we delivered a bad quarter, it is evidence there’s an AI bubble. If we delivered a great quarter, we are fueling the AI bubble,” he told employees. “If we were off by just a hair, if it looked even a little bit creaky, the whole world would’ve fallen apart.”

He referenced online memes that jokingly describe Nvidia as the linchpin of the global economy and the only thing standing between the U.S. and recession.

“Have you guys seen some of them?” he asked employees. “We’re basically holding the planet together—and it’s not untrue.”

Every valiant, successful effort to rally the audience, to remind us of how much power average people have in swaying governments and affecting change, was countered with a reminder of how little people who live in the West, from politicians to journalists to civilians, have done to support Palestine

In a refreshing change of pace from the average star-studded benefit, no attempts were made to act like we are not living in desolate times. The 25-year-old Palestinian journalist Yara Eid spoke about the death of her “soulmate” and fellow journalist, Ibrahim, before introducing a video montage paying tribute to all the Palestinian journalists killed by Israeli forces in Palestine

Drawings of each journalist, along with details of how and when they were killed—often alongside family, or while reporting—faded in onto the screen at an increasingly rapid clip, until there were so many deceased onscreen that it all became static.
