There is currently a big influx of new users. Most, if not all, being reddit refugees.

I want to welcome you all to the fediverse, lemmy and retrolemmy specifically. If you need help starting out you can either try [email protected] or you can comment here, post in this community or message me or @[email protected] directly. We are here to help.

Some basic things:

Usernames are usually written out as @[email protected]. The @ in front indicates a user. It looks like an e-mail adress by design, Because there can be users with the same name on different instances. For example: @[email protected]

Communities are usually written out as [email protected] . The exclamation point indicates a community. This also looks like an e-mail address because there can also be communities with the same name on different instances.

Sometimes new communities will not load. This usually means that the community is not yet federated. You can either manually add it to lemmy-federate or you can subscribe. That way the community is federated and posts will show up. If you make a new community it is always good practice to add it to Lemmy federate. To make sure it's federated to all participating instances and maximize your user spread.

Here is a good FAQ via Lemm.ee.

Some good resources for finding communities:

https://lemmyverse.net/ - A website dedicated to finding new communities. Be sure to set your home instance using the domain name: for example: "retrolemmy.com". This is to make sure that if you click a community, it automatically links it through your instance.

https://lemmy-federate.com/ - a website to post communities so that servers' bots automatically subscribe to it, and it will show up in /all on all participating instances.

[email protected] - a community dedicated to promoting new communities.
[email protected] - same as above.
[email protected] - same as above.
[email protected] - lemmy apps community

Apps

There are loads of apps for your phone on the stores. Many of them were refitted from reddit apps to Lemmy. Here's a big megathread with all kinds of apps via lemmy.world
Or you can go to https://lemmyapps.netlify.app/ to find one not in the megathread

We hope you have a good time here!

I'm sorry to say we had over a day of downtime starting yesterday. I'm not sure what happened, but it seems to have happened the day after the maintenance from the provider.

This is the story so far:
The day before yesterday (the 24th) the server was offline for a few hours due to maintenance on the provider side. It was announced beforehand, but the exact date of the maintenance was not, so I assumed it was the maintenance.

Yesterday (the 25th) the server went offline again. Since it was still within the announced maintenance window, I assumed it was also part of that. After a while the server still didn't come online, so I started worrying.

I called the provider yesterday, as it seems the server just disappeared. They put out a ticket to the service department, and all we could do was wait.

The server came back online today without warning, and a backup was restored. This means there is at least a little data lost from the last time it was online, but it's at least a very recent backup. In any case more recent than my own backup.

We hope the problems are now gone, and the server is as stable as it was before the maintenance.

We are truly sorry for the inconvenience.

We had a little downtime earlier today. This was due to maintenance on the provider end.

Unfortunately this meant a downtime of about 3 hours. But thankfully we are up and running again.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

I have just added email functionality to retrolemmy. Notifications can now end up in you email. If this is not working, make sure you've enabled "Send notifications to Email" and either look in your spam folder, or re-add your email in your profile settings.

This does not mean there is an email requirement. Adding your email to your profile is completely optional, and will always be optional.

It happened. Retrolemmy turns 1 as of today, juli 20th.

This year has flown by. But knowing that lemmy only was on 0.18.1 it also feels like such a long time ago. I have learned so much thanks to this site. But still have so, so much to learn.

I want to thank everyone here on retrolemmy and lemmy as a whole for being here. For making this my new home online after the reddit exodos. I want to thank spez (fuck you spez), because without him this amazing place on the internet wouldn't be here. I want to thank @[email protected] for making time to help out here. I want to thank all the mods on the communities. I want to thank my family, for being patient with me when I broke the page again (and again and again) and spent the evening trying to fix it.

Most of all, I want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for giving this place a shot, and being here.

To another year of awesome retro fun!

Cheers.

Hello,

The server had some stability issues, so I decided it was time to upgrade. The new server has a few more cores, double the memory and a disk upgrade. (the disk upgrade was not needed, but included in the package, and it can't hurt)

I assume most stability issues have been fixed now. If you notice anything, feel free to contact me here on lemmy or reply to this thread.

Thank you for your patience!

We updated to 0.19.5. This was not as smooth as I had hoped, and due to that the page was offline for almost a day while I had to troubleshoot and figure out what went wrong.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused. But as far as I know, we are fully operational.

If there are any other problems, please let me know by sending me a private message, or putting it in the comments under here.

Thanks for your patience.

I'm happy to announce the new addition to our admin team: @[email protected]

He's mostly known as the owner of mods4ever and all associated projects. Including, but not limited to randomizers for games like Duke Nukem 3D and Unreal, working on Scummvm's Groovie engine, and their lemmy page housing communities for said randomizers and on there you can find your main stop for the "The 7th Guest" game series: [email protected].

He also used to speedrun The 7th Guest.

If you have any questions, you can message him or me directly on here or leave a comment.

Welcome to the team!

After a user created half a dozen accounts in a span of 24 hours to "battle" a ban on a lemmy.world community, I'm regretting to inform that I have added an application questionnaire to the account creation process.

I want this instance to be a inviting and hassle-free home for any enthousiast of the retro kind. And unfortunately this means it's a little less accessible, and might take a bit before your account can be in use.

I will get to your application in due time, and will check regularly every day.

I hope this will catch trolls and obvious abusers more easily before they become a pain in the ass of the mods of communities.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

If you have any questions or complaints feel free to reply to this post or send me a message.
