Welcome to the fold!

A community for all Bromptonites of the Fediverse!

The Brompton is a folding bicycle which is known for its unique design and compact folded size. The 3-part fold transforms the bike into an incredibly small locked package in no time.

Made in London, UK - loved all over the world. <3

For those of you who’ve bought a G line, what are your honest thoughts? How is it different than a regular sized Brompton? Thanks in advance.

I think I've found the best place to hide a tracker on my Brompton: in its front carrier block!

It does require a Pebblebee Tag, as AirTag and Chipolo One are too big to fit. Just make sure to leave a space on top for the locking mechanism to fit.

Edit: I was told that AirTags fit as well, so I guess Motorola Moto Tag might fit too, as I believe they are roughly the size of AirTags.

So I let the chain wear down too much in the past two years and the rear sprockets appear to be worn out and will need to be replaced. The stock 50T chain ring is also showing signs of wear but appears to still be good for a few years.

I wanted to use this opportunity to see whether I could switch the gearing up a little.

The 13-16 gearing has been surprisingly capable but I need just a little more hill climbing ability; the lowest gear (2.64m) is just barely enough sometimes. I'd like it a tad lower I think.

On the high end, I usually ride in the upper two gears on flat ground. The highest gear (7.98m) feels just a tad too much sometimes though and I then fall back to one lower (6.49m) but that feels a good bit too low. That doesn't bother me a lot but it'd still be nicer to have a gear that's just right.

On a downhill, the highest gear is always sufficient for me; feels pretty much exactly right. I wouldn't mind slightly more metres of development but, honestly, I don't care very much when I'm already going way past 30km/h and I don't ride downhill for very long usually. I'm unsure whether reducing the highest gear slightly would make me pedal uncomfortably quickly down hill though.

Stock and current config:

Hub 64% 100% 157%
Low sprocket 2.64 4.14 6.49
High sprocket 3.25 5.10 7.98

I'm currently thinking about a 44T chain ring with 12-17:

Hub 64% 100% 157%
Low sprocket 2.19 3.43 5.37
High sprocket 3.10 4.86 7.61

or 12-16:

Hub 64% 100% 157%
Low sprocket 2.33 3.64 5.71
High sprocket 3.10 4.86 7.61

The lower gears being lower and closer together sounds very nice.

In the higher gears, my hope is that the slightly lower highest gear would allow me to use it the majority of the time on flat ground because I suspect the second highest gear would feel quite a bit too low as a fall-back.

I could see 12-15 being an option perhaps but that also gets the lowest gear much closer to 13-16 again:

Hub 64% 100% 157%
Low sprocket 2.48 3.89 6.09
High sprocket 3.10 4.86 7.61

But obviously the lowest gear gets very close to the previous config again.

Where I have a hard time is imagining how significant the difference between 2.64m, 2.19m, 2.33m and 2.48m are in an uphill scenario. The jump between the lower gears in 13-16 (3.25m to 2.64m) in practice feels significant but not that large either and we're talking about a much lower absolute drop being gained in the low end by switching gearing. I don't know whether the practical effect of this is linear though and I suspect it might not be.

I'd really appreciate practical experience here. Have you changed gearing on your Brompton? From what to what and how significant were the differences?

Anyone who has journeyed deep into the mountain ranges of Europe to take on some of the legendary climbs of the Grand Tours understands what it is like to stand on top of a mountain, breathing in the cold, thin air while surveying landscapes that roll away far below.

But British adventurer and all-round action man Neil Laughton, 60, took that achievement several levels higher when he journeyed to Nepal to set a new Guinness World Record for the highest ever bike ride.

Teaming up with Nepali Sirdar Nima Kanchha Sherpa, the pair rode and carried their bikes to the top of the 7,246-metre high Putha Huinchuli mountain over a period of several days, were Laughton rode 20 metres at the highest point, before turning tail and journeying back down again.

Laughton's machine of choice was a Brompton, while Nima used a Cube mountain bike for the ride.

I've been researching for ages but struggling to tell what's the exact best product. Ideally I'd like a combination of products that allows for usb c charging (to be seen primarily) that feels tightly integrated into the Brompton. I like the fork integration of the official light but would prefer usb c charging. I can more easily find appropriate mounts to attach to the screw on the back of the saddle. I've seen AliExpress brackets that use GoPro style mount holes then you adapt to Garmin/Cateye or whatever but I haven't seen photos of them in use and I've read they can interfere with the luggage block. Ideally someone else would have a combo of products that I can see works aesthetically and practically and I'd just get the same.

What do people here use?

I'm picking up a C Line Explore and wondering why there's a weight difference between these two. I'm interested in the free bag but I assume there are structural differences if the one above is a KG lighter?

This is how a #brompton EZ clamp spring looks like after a decent few months of usage.

As you can see, it's quite compressed now and, as a result, not springy enough to hold the clamp up properly anymore.

That lifespan is not bad by any means (easy enough to re-print) but does that happen to y'all too or is it just me?

It's also just the handlebar one; the other is holding up fine.

I remember seeing a variant of this which had an actual metal spring inside; I might look into that.

Printed myself an EZ clamp spring for my #brompton at @cccda yesterday; a must-have for any @brompton rider!

It's *so* handy to have a local #hackspace with amazing people to help you out for this sort of stuff. Much love <3

Another plus is: They are pretty easy to install as they have the clamp on the inner side of the handle and not on outer side (as the GP1 have). So interference with the break leaverclapmp is not that problematic.

I was on a short trip on the weekend and wanted to have my luggage on the bike instead of carrying it on my back. (Unfortunately, I don't have a front bag yet.)

Some detailed shots of the attachment:

Wooden rod attached to underside of Brompton Backpack and backpack shoulder straps layed over

During my trip I realized that my legs are hitting the rod a little. I repositioned it a little further back during the tour.

Backpack attached to Brompton rear rack

To increase the stability, you can wrap the rubber straps around the rack (behind the wheel) which will increase the tension of the straps.

The idea was taken from Gianni who has a lot of great tips around Bromptons touring: https://piped.video/watch?v=vfQe4f0jbZs

Hills! But I love hills! and sky, and space, & freedom, wild freedom

Original description from Video:

In May, I took my Brompton and my little tent and cycled through the Peak District, to go and see my Dad. There were a lot of hills - and quite a lot of inquisitive cows - along the way. I camped wild, close to Axe Edge Moor, high up at the watershed of two great river systems. And it was fantastic.

Hills aren't easy, but I love them. Especially these hills, close to where I grew up. I don't know what it is - something to do with being up high, the sky, and the space, and solitude, and a feeling of wild freedom.

And I hope you enjoy meeting my Dad! We are both being treated for cancer, and we both love being out on the bike.

Hope you like the film!
