I don't know how extended this is, but apparently there are car makers selling cars with no keys. Instead you download a proprietary app and use it to access your car.

I like being practical and talking to a car to turn the volume up or down, to open the door or to turn the temperature higher are things I don't need nor want. Give me mechanical levers, reachable stalks and no proprietary bloatware. I don't need a movie theater on wheels.

Imagine an early 2000s car running on an electric motor. That's what I want.

Let's be clear: i'm not saying conspiracies doesn't exist. By conspiracy theories, i mean the plots whose existence is at best highly unlikely, at worst totally senseless, notably if:

-They are breaking the laws of physics.

-They are too costly (logistically and/or financially) to be profitable.

-They are defended by untrustworthy sources (populist or cult leaders, random people, celebrities without expertise in the concerned domain, parodies taken seriously,...).

-They are often involving far-right's scapegoats.

-They are involving a large amount of people.

-They reject science by principle.

-The interests of the supposed conspirators are unclear or incoherent.

-Their so-called proofs are incoherent, manipulated or are proving nothing at all.

-They would be funny if they were published as parodies in The Onion.

I can't see it happening tbh, but like the USA government discussed putting restriction on AI development, I think OpenAI or some other companies asked them to do so!? And there were short/reels of high profile developers hyping out the fact that "we don't know what we're doing", and one of them quit his job. So why is all that hype? Is the "Matrix" route actually a possible future ?

There are some caveats though. You are immortal but what this actually means is that you are unable to do anything that would probabilistically lead to your death.

So, for example, if you were more probable to die getting into a car than walking, you would choose to walk. But only if choosing to walk was more probable than the probability of you surviving after getting into a car.

It's kind of confusing, but essentially You have no choice if something is about to kill you, but if you plan far enough ahead, the probability of you choosing to do or not to do something versus the probability of your survivability can potentially win out.

So given this version of immortality, what would you plan to do to benefit yourself in some way?

I've already thought about potentially hooking up some kind of lottery Number machine to a guillotine in order to win the lottery but it turns out that the probability of you not making this machine is more likely than making the machine and surviving so you just never end up making the machine.

In order to get an idea of where I'm coming from, here's a video that explains a bit aboabout quantum immortality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTZZUjnrbF8

I love the German word verbesserungsbedürftig, meaning in need of improvement. I'm not German, but thought this was a cracking word.

Death is inevitable but we still seem flummoxed by it happening. We have all kinds of End of Life policies and procedures which do everything possible to make life difficult for those left behind.

Our language is around loss and unexpected, and grief and being bereft.

Why do we make Death so hard to process in our community and what can we do to normalise it across society?

I wanted to ask for long time this question, Why does this keeps happening?

Apple, Kagi, Vivaldi, news companies and even Google.

I started seeing a good amount of people who stopped caring about consumer rights/freedom and started to think and advocate for companies.

Even in non-brands cases, a lot of people buy the product with the highest price, because they think that it has a higher quality despite the fact that there is no necessary correlation between both.

How do I know that? I know a shop that buy cheap products and sell them with very expensive price tag, to my surprise they are making insane profits.

What is happening?

I’m finally making the switch from Reddit. The Voyager app seems like a pretty seamless transition, but I’d love to hear any tips about using this platform, or what quirks distinguish it from Reddit as a whole.

American Militia Members. Where the hell are you? THIS is what you exist for and you are doing NOTHING!

Edit: I've only heard "defense against tyranny" as justification for these militias by these militia

What angle must the blade be? Is it good to have a high attack angle, or one that's nearly flat?

How heavy should the apparatus holding the blade be? How far should it travel? Is keen sharpening important, or does the weight do most of the work? What kind of latch/release do you use?

Lastly, morbid extra credit, did they ever execute someone with their face up, so they could see the blade coming?

EDIT FOR CLARITY: Way more complex than an axe or a noose.

Hi all! This is an alt for anonymity. Please be gentle, this is a hard topic for me to discuss.

I'm a progressive United States citizen who is looking to get out. I'm of Italian descent so I'm working on getting Italian citizenship through jure sanguinis, but it's going to take some time, if it works at all (gotta substantiate some relations) and won't extend to my husband until he completes a citizenship test, which he can do after living in Italy for two years.

Here's my big question: is moving to Italy even a good idea?

I know there's a significant element of fascism there, but that seems to be the case to varying extents throughout Europe. I've visited a few times as a tourist and everyone was very kind. I also have a US cousin that lives there as a permanent resident near Napoli and she is very encouraging, saying people will be welcoming. We don't want much, just to make a living and maybe have a kid.

Singularity Hub used to publish all their content under Creative Commons and that had even earned them a place in the Creative Commons Wiki.

Today I checked up on the website only to see that they changed their articles license to a propitiatory one. https://singularityhub.com/

How to guarantee that when I choose a website that publish articles under Creative Commons, that they will not change their license?

As someone just starting their journey into privacy-focused, open-source software, I'd love to hear what apps the community recommends.

I'm particularly interested in:

  • What messaging apps you use instead of WhatsApp/Messenger
  • Alternatives to Google services (email, calendar, cloud storage)
  • Social media alternatives that respect privacy
  • Browsers
  • Password managers worth using
  • Any other productivity apps you’d recommend me to use

I'm using Apple devices (I know, I know), so apps that work well in this ecosystem would be ideal. Which ones have you found perform exceptionally well?

What was your experience transitioning away from corporate services? Any pitfalls to avoid or strategies that made the switch easier?

I like to post album artwork on lemmy but i know most people dislike ai generated image here. Some detectors say an image is likely ai with like 80% and other the opposite and say it's highly likely to be human made

When I was growing up, my dad would occasionally challenge me and my brothers to "Indian Wrestling." The feat involved was the second definition according to Mirriam Webster (i.e. opponents standing statically and trying to pull each other off balance).

I've tried to look up people attempting this on youtube and elsewhere without success (it's always the leg wrestling variety that I find). Does this have a modern non-ethnically-charged name? Do people not do this anymore? I need to know!
